Back to that walnut tree

Having a walnut tree in our yard came as a surprise to us. After Hurricane Irene, we noticed large acorn like balls all around the yard. They were way too big to be normal acorns so it peaked our curiosity. After some poking, prodding, and research on the Internet, we realized we have a walnut tree. So now what? Well what we have found out is this, it's a black walnut tree, we learned how to "harvest" the nuts and well, the juglone that it releases into the soil around the tree is not good for the other plants or grass around it. So much for all our hard work this summer. Bummer.
Now some pictures. Here is one to show you just how tall this tree is, no wonder I had a mini heart attack when the hurricane was coming. These trees are huge ! You can see how large it is compared to our home.

Here is the base of the tree with three hostas surrounding it. Not sure why these lasted but the grass that was planted all around it and two other hostas did not. Odd. See all that dirt, believe it or not that was grass earlier in the season.

Another view.

Behind that bird bath, if you look close you will see a dead hosta. Guess the toxins from the walnut tree got to it. So strange.

And well, what we all want from the tree.

I should have taken the pictures of what it looks like before you hull it but I never did. It starts off with a green covering that turns black. Here are some pics I found on the Internet.

Hopefully next year we get a lot more. I've heard different things on how long to let them dry out. We've eaten a bunch so far, but I think the last ones we will let dry out for a while to see. Can't wait to see if they are any different from the ones we've eaten already. I'll keep ya posted !

The love you have put into the house has given this tree a reason to bear fruit! Isn't love amazing? Now keep that love going strong, the two of you will be strong...God thanks you for giving life back to one of his creations!

Some plans come undone...

This seems to be the theme of our lives lately but it also fit in to the semi decorating reno I wanted to do in our downstairs bathroom/laundry room. And see that was the question, is it a bathroom or is it a laundry room or heck, is it both? I decided to embrace it and decorate around it being a laundry room. I planned on painting the walls gray and one day I will get around to it. But for now I just used the decorations I had come up with to change it up a bit. Here is the before. And the after... We removed the verticals and hung a valance that we had, we had changed the light fixture months ago to make it flow better with the one above the sink. We also changed the hardware on all the cabinets to silver instead of bronze. We also added a shelf to go above the washer and dryer. This way all the soap, fabric softener and bounce sheets had a new home. I then added decorations that went with the theme of a laundry room. Believe it or not this old washboard was in our shed. Looks like ...

It's no secret...

that our bodies can do amazing things. Especially us women. It's also no secret that we are almost suffocated with the image of what the "perfect "woman should look like. Does that person really exist in life without a cook, maid, personal trainer, butler, life coach, plastic surgeon, etc. etc? Who knows. What I do know is this, I have seen beautiful women in my life, many of them. And guess what? They are not what are in those photo-shopped magazines. They are just simply beautiful. When we make the decision to have a baby, of course we wonder what is going to happen to our bodies? Will we gain 200lbs? We will get stretch marks? Will we be able to lose the weight we gain? And maybe some don't even worry because they are just happy with being pregnant. For me, I was happy to be pregnant. I was overweight to begin with and my first trimester was a doozie. I ended up losing weight then(don't worry I gained it back) But I didn't gain too much because I had...

Tea bag magic

Don't mind this super old picture of our home. This was when we first moved in but I needed to show the coloring of the chair when it was first purchased. We bought this chair from Ikea when we first purchased our home. It was just okay to me but it fit where I wanted so I worked with it for a while. I played around with different pillows and blankets for the chair but nothing ever really felt right. Until recently, when I decided to take off the bottom cushion cover and dye it with tea bags. I have done the application twice and I think I have finally gotten it to the desired coloring. Take a look. Original 1st application 2nd application Another view So maybe now it will feel a bit better in the room. Not sure if I will go for a third application or change up the New York pillow.
